“My paintings of food transformed into an admiration and
respect for the chefs who create ‘masterpieces’ on a
plate, and the process started revealing other truths; I
saw the parallels between the art of making food and
painting, and it became an amazing celebration of both
crafts. Chefs work like artists to create an experience
that will hopefully affect someone’s life in a positive
way. They have a passion for their craft just as I do.”

Christopher M.
Born
in 1975 in Oakland, California, as a child the artist always had a penchant
for drawing and painting. But he never considered being an artist a
viable vocation until he entered a contest in his senior year of high
school to win a semester scholarship to an art school. His portfolio
prevailed and was awarded the scholarship and Christopher M has never
looked back.
Educated at the
noted Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Christopher M.
graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration in 2000.
He earned awards and honours from the Academy for his sketchbook, figure
painting, landscapes and still life works. He also earned accolades from
the San Francisco Society of Illustrators of which he is a member.

In
“Labor of Love” Christopher M. combines his ingredients of composition,
color, texture and a mastery of realism to inspire us to appreciate the
splendour of “cake couture”. Something blue permeates his canvas with
monochromatic shades of creamy and shimmering whites. The artist’s

The artist’s composition portrays the Executive Chef and sommelier as
they convene to select the perfect wine pairing for each delightful
course on the menu. Descending down the spiral staircase, they retreat
to the restaurant’s wine cellar, replete with a fine vintage collection
that is the result of years of acquiring the finest wines from regions
around the world. The subtle position of their respective glasses
illustrates the process in which they evaluate a certain vintage. The
chef inhales the aroma, as the sommelier swirls his glass to examine the
wine’s body and texture. They intentionally avoid eye contact as to not
influence one another’s opinion. Inciting the senses, the many nuances
of color, flavor, weight and bouquet are taken into consideration as
they use their expertise to collaborate on the most select, epicurean
experience.

It has been said that “a few bottles of wine
are as standard as salt and pepper in the kitchen of a haute cuisine
chef”. Contemporary painter Christopher M. pays tribute to this notion
in an image appropriately entitled, “Cuisine avec le vin” (translation:
Cooking with wine).
In the culinary world, wine and food matching is a nuanced art. Like any
art, education and experience are vital for superb results. Great chefs

“Mis en place”
(translation: “put in place”, or “everything
in place”) is a striking vertical
